The City of Shelton and the surrounding area provide
the resources and services necessary to ensure that our residents are
cared for physically, mentally and spiritually.
Department of Police Services
The
Police Department is currently operating at an increased staffing level
of 51 sworn Police Officers, as well as eight non-sworn members and
a part-time staff of 12 employees. The Department is entrusted with
the responsibility of enforcing all State and local laws, including
City Ordinances. The members of the Department are responsible for providing
law enforcement/Police services to the more than 70,000 people who work
or live in the City.
Fire Department
Sheltons
Fire Department provides protection from fire and the enforcement of all
laws pertaining to fire prevention and safety. Manned by 225 volunteers,
the department is made up of four companies operating from four stations
located throughout the community:
Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Company
Huntington Fire Company
Pine Rock Park Fire Company
White Hills Fire Company
Currently, the fire department utilizes 25 pieces of fire-fighting equipment.
All vehicles are radio-equipped as part of the mutual assistance program
covering Shelton and surrounding cities.
Medical and Health Services
Griffin Hospital, a general care facility located in Derby, serves Shelton
and the rest of the Valley area. Griffin Hospital is a 160 bed non-profit
general care hospital located in neighboring Derby. Affiliated with the
Yale Medical School, Griffin has a staff of 1,125 employees and a medical
staff of 285.
Sheltons two hospitals primarily provide
nursing and convalescent care to the elderly. Flora and Mary Hewitt Hospital
and its affiliates, Gardner Heights and Shelton Lakes, provide skilled
care for over 500 area residents. United Methodist Homes of Connecticut,
Inc. operates a 120 bed skilled-nursing facility. They provide 182 residential
units for the elderly.

Ambulance
Service
Ambulance service is provided by the AMR, a private corporation, under
a contract with the Echo Hose Ambulance Corps, a non-profit volunteer
organization. Service is available on a 24-hour basis through Echo Hose.
The Shelton Youth Service Bureau
The Shelton Youth Service Bureau was established in 1988 by the City
of Shelton to coordinate, plan and develop services for the youth
of Shelton and their families. Located in Shelton High School, the
Bureau works cooperatively with school personnel, police, community
resources, youth and parents to provide eucational programs and recreational
activities that promote positive youth development and strengthen
family ties. The Youth Service Bureau addresses youth issues and concerns
through life skills education classes, conflict mediation training,
awareness campaigns and promotion of peer advocacy throughout the
year.
