Parks & Recreation
Shelton residents have many types of City-run athletic and cultural programs available. The City organizes and runs: sports programs, league activities, arts and craft programs, a year round swimming program and various recreational activities throughout the year. Over 8,000 weekly participants take part in our spring outdoor recreation programs, while 3,500 adults and children play weekly in our fall programs. Sports such as baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, football and cheerleading are available at several age levels. Winter months find over 2,000 residents participating in our indoor gym program that includes volleyball and basketball.
Six parks with over 150 acres of developed land provide tennis and basketball courts, athletic fields, picnic areas, fishing and boating. There are also two private golf courses and 153 acre Indian Well State Park on Lake Housatonic.

The Shelton Community Center
The 60,000 sq.ft. Center contains an indoor basketball court, a 25 yard, 8 lane swimming pool, two weight rooms with 21 pieces of exercise equipment, seven multipurpose rooms, a mid-sized banquet room with kitchen facilities and a branch library. It also houses the offices of the Parks and Recreation Department, a private day care center and a U.S. Post Office.

Shelton’s Nature Trails
Residents enjoy the year-round availability of trails on Shelton’s open space for passive recreation such as hiking. fishing. birdwatching and wildlife study. There are a choice of trail types, matching the open space lands diversity of meadows, forests and watercourses
The largest hiking network is in the Shelton Lakes Greenway. Detailed trails map guide for this area along with open space rules are available at City Hall, the Plumb Memorial Library, the Community Center and on the internet at borntoexplore.org/trails. The White House of the United States recognized this trail system as a Community Millennium Trail in May 2000. We take special celebration on National Trails Day, the first Saturday of June, with organized hikes.
